Recipe: Apple Pie

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup ice water
  • 6-8 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Add the ice water gradually, mixing with a fork until the dough starts to come together. Divide the dough into two equal portions, shape into discs, and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough into a circle large enough to fit into a 9-inch pie dish.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Mix well until the apples are evenly coated.
  5. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared pie dish, dot with cubed butter, and cover with the second rolled-out dough disc, crimping the edges to seal. Cut a few slits on the top crust for venting.
  6. Brush the top crust with beaten egg wash and sprinkle with granulated sugar. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet to catch any drips. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes before serving. Enjoy a slice of warm apple pie on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
